Visit Information

Before signing up for one of our studies, we want to help you know more about what you can expect upon visiting the Family & Development Lab and how we protect your personal information.  If you decide you would like to participate, you can register here.

How long does a typical visit last?

In our current study, each visit lasts between 2 to 3 hours (with 3 hours being a high estimate).

Who is expected to come to each visit?

Although it may differ study to study, we are currently recruiting for a study that includes both parents and their 5- to 6-year-old child.

I work full-time, so I can't come during the day.

No problem!  We have weekend and evening appointments available.

What if I have multiple children and can't find a sitter?

As a courtesy for our families, we provide free child care for your other kiddos during visits.  Just let us know in advance so we can make sure to have one of our awesome team members on-hand!

Where are you located?  Is it hard to find?  Is there parking?

We are located at Providence College, in a building (Sowa Hall) very close to the main gate at the corner of River Avenue and Eaton Street.   We will do our best to save a parking space for you in the lot right near our building.  Every now and then, security asks that you park on the street, but it’s only a short walk to our building.  No matter what, we will be in the parking lot waiting for you, helping you to park and walking you into the building.

What will my family do?

When you arrive, a team member will explain the study to you and you will have as much time as you'd like to ask questions.  If you choose to participate, we will ask you to complete a little bit of paperwork.  Then, if your family is ready, we will begin the study!  In our current study, parents will be asked to engage in a videotaped conflict discussion on two topics of their choosing before filling out some questionnaires regarding family facts, marital relationships, and their children's development and behavior.  While parents are doing that, children will be given story stems to finish with dolls, answer questions about their family, complete picture puzzles, and play games with people from our team.

What if there's a part I don't want to do?

We want all our participating families to have a pleasant and comfortable experience, so if there are any activities or questions with which you feel uncomfortable, simply let us know and we can skip it.  You, your partner, and/or your child are free not to participate or to withdraw at any time, for whatever reason.

What if I still have more questions?

That’s great!  Feel free to email us or give us a call and we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have about participating in our study.  You’re also free to ask us whatever questions you have at any point before, during, or after participating in our study.

Do I get anything for participating?

Families can earn up to $100 for participating and children will receive a small toy.

What if I change my mind about participating in the study?

We want to make sure that everyone in your family is comfortable, so if there’s an activity you’d rather not do or a question you’d rather not answer, just let us know and we’ll skip it.  You, your partner, or your child can stop at any time, for any reason.

Am I committing to anything by registering?

Absolutely not!  Registering your family is simply a way of indicating you would like more information.  If you register and are eligible for our current study, we will contact you and explain all the details.  You can decide at that point whether you would like to participate or not.  If you indicate on your registration form that you would like to be contacted about other studies in the Family & Development Lab for which you are eligible, we will contact you in the future when those opportunities arise.  As always, you’re free to decide whether or not you would like to participate.

Who will have access to my information?

Your privacy is our top priority.  All information about your family will be kept secure and will only be accessible by Dr. Warmuth and a select group of highly trained assistants.  We will never share your information with anyone not affiliated with the Family & Development Lab.  And, none of your or your child's personal information will ever be used in any presentation or report of our findings.

What if I change my mind and no longer wish to be on your list?

No problem!  Contact us at any time and we will immediately remove you and your family's information from our system.

How do we sign up?

To sign up to participate in one of our studies, please fill out the participant registration form.  If your family qualifies, we’ll contact you to set up a time for your visit.
