Official Statement from Providence College
re: Allegations of Sexual Assault

(March 18)

At Providence College, everything we do is designed to provide students with an environment that inspires learning, encourages fellowship and celebrates our faith. The safety and health of our students is at the core of that environment.

As a part of that environment, every student at Providence College agrees to abide by a strict code of conduct.  When we have information that a student may have violated that commitment, we thoroughly review all of the available facts and take swift, decisive and appropriate action – including potential discipline against those involved.  We also have a responsibility to protect the privacy of the individuals involved as the incident is reviewed and the possibility of sanctions is discussed.

In November, we were informed of an incident involving two student-athletes on the men’s basketball team.  In this situation and all cases like it, our response was immediate and in compliance with our long-standing disciplinary process.  The two student-athletes involved were suspended indefinitely from game action by the men’s basketball coach until the disciplinary process was completed.

At the conclusion of the process, the loss of privilege to represent the team in game action remained in effect through the balance of the 2013-2014 season.  One student-athlete has since withdrawn from Providence College. The other remains enrolled at the college and continues to practice with the team.

Providence College will certainly share any relevant information as requested by law enforcement, as permitted by law.

Providence College is committed to providing an academic and campus environment where students, administration, faculty and staff feel welcome, safe and protected.  We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure the existence of that environment.
