Providence College to Host Annual Friar 5K Race

friarfivelogo.jpgProvidence, R.I. — Providence College will host the third annual Friar 5K race at the College on Saturday, October 20, 2012. The USA Track and Field-sanctioned event will cover 3.1 miles through the campus and surrounding neighborhood, beginning and ending at Harkins Hall. The race is open to the public; walkers and runners are welcome.

Race participants will be required to pay a registration fee to cover the costs of the event, as well as benefit the PC Fund. The registration fee for PC students and under 18 is $18.00, and for PC alumni/faculty, staff, and the general public is $25.00. Race day registration fees will increase. Awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group.

Pre-registration packet pick-up will be on Friday, October 19, 2012 from 4:00pm-8:00pm in the Slavin Center Atrium, on campus. Day of race registration and packet pickup will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Slavin Lawn and in the Slavin Center Atrium, with a 10:00 a.m. start time scheduled for the race. All participants will be invited to the Friar Fan Fest (co-sponsored with Athletics) on Slavin Center Lawn immediately following the race. This event will include race awards, live entertainment, activities, a farmer's market, and refreshments.

The purpose of the Friar 5K is to bring together a wide range of individuals to engage with the College and its mission while educating participants about the PC Fund, which is the College’s annual fund. The PC Fund eases the gap between the College’s projected needs and existing financial resources. Initiatives supported by the fund include academic programs and faculty support, student programs and services, campus life, technology, financial aid, and athletics.

The Friar 5K is being planned by a committee of students, alumni, faculty, and staff representing a variety of offices and departments on campus including the Office of Institutional Advancement, Residence Life, and Recreational Sports. This committee is being led by Sarah Firetto ’03, Associate Director of Alumni Relations.

Pre-registration is highly recommended.  For more information and to register, visit or contact Sarah Firetto, Associate Director of Alumni Relations at / (401) 865-1815.
